Enchanted Forest Postcards 20 Postcards Johanna Basford Books Reviews
Being and avid colorist that started this past summer, and I fell into hook line and sinker; I have collected a variety of coloring books, different types of mediums (pencils, pens, markers) ways to keep them all organized. I am learning my style, new techniques and what I enjoy coloring; which at the moment is pretty much most anything, although some of the finer detail areas have to wait for days my wrists or eyes aren't bothering me; and having a magnifying glass also helps too. There is such a wide variety of coloring books out there for adults; if you are looking for something to help de-stress, to help cope maybe with different medical issues you maybe facing or whatever, don't be afraid, just jump on it there and give it a shot; I am sure you will find something that will suit your fancy and they even have coloring books for men too. A lot of these artists have GREAT talent, and it surely shows when you flip through these pages. So, what are you waiting for? Pick up a coloring pencil, kick up your feet, sit back and relax and color yourself a great picture!!!
I was going to give it two starts for "I don't like it," but, thinking about it, I really do hate this thing. I loved the idea of postcards because they seemed useful, but it the pictures are just shrunken down from the original, which makes it really really hard to color. Everything is TINY. Like, I have to sharpen my pencil after ever stinking leaf or bubble or flower. Not cool.
The illustrations in this book are so tiny I can barely see them. Hanna Karzon also has postcard size illustrations and they are the size of the full page. Easy to see and easy to color. All of the smaller size Johanna Basford items - although the illustrations are gorgeous- are so small as to be almost impossible to color. I have bought the daily calendar which had paper that was thinner than regular copy paper, I have notecards with illustrations where the illustrations were extremely small, I have her wall calendars which are Fantastic - I’v bought them two years in a row and am extremely satisfied with. I have all her books - most with backup copies which are what got mu coloring hobby started. I love her Work but some of the products - the smaller ones - I have been quite dissatisfied with - the paper quality and size of illustrations are not what I would expect from someone of her caliber. I thought these would be comparable to Hanna Karzon’s postcards where illustrations are large and a great way to sample color combinations before using the books - all of which I own, but more importantly the illustrations are large - taking up the majority of the page which is also a little larger - great to throw in a purse with a few pencils when having to wait for appointments etc. Please Johanna - please ask your publishers to improve the quality of your smaller items.
I've looked around a LOT for interesting small adult coloring books. Johanna's cards have become my favorites. I wish she would come out with a few more! I also have her "Secret Garden", and will be starting on my second book of "Secret Garden" cards soon.
What I particularly like about Johanna's postcard booklets is that they are portable ( and each one doesn't take forever to finish, you can see the end), excellent card stock ( no bleed through), printed one side only, and the images range from tiny to small. BUT they are not always just designs and patterns, which I find a bit too boring and dizzying. There are little scenes with hidden critters, and usually a focal point to draw your eye. You can choose to accentuate this focal point ( eg owl's eyes) or not. And there is still plenty of small pattern to keep your hands and mind busy. They also offer the option of subtle shading with water color pencils ( I use Caran d'Ache) within the small shapes if you want to add depth or mystery.
These make great gift cards on their own, or as the card given with another gift. They are personal, no two will be alike because YOU did them.
I have yet to find comparable booklets, in size, concept, design, and material quality.
